Novoselie School
The comfort of children and teachers was a top priority when working on a school project for 1,300 students. It is equally important to take into account that this place is not just an educational institution, but the heart of the new residential area of Novoselye in the Leningrad region.
read-about-projectThe building is delicately integrated into the surrounding low and medium-rise buildings. The buildings are united around the central atrium and radiate from it. From the courtyard side, they are grouped around the central square, which descends in terraces to the inner school square. Such a spatial planning solution allows a large amount of natural light to penetrate.
The pitched roofs of the classrooms, the crenellated roof with sidelights in the sports building, as well as various window configurations give the project even more complex outlines. Due to this, the building is perceived from the outside as several buildings commensurate with the person and the environment. Cantilevered projections above the ground floor reduce the construction spot and create areas for outdoor activities and recreation.
The appearance of the project is also dictated by the style and scale of the area: clear lines, concise colors. A juicy yellow shade was chosen as an accent — it is present both on the facades and in the interiors of the school along with the textures of wood, exposed concrete and metal.
Elementary and high school students study in separate buildings. Each wing has a separate entrance with a wardrobe. For parents, there is a waiting area in front of the turnstiles, as well as a cafe. Another entrance is in the leisure center, so that residents of the area can attend trainings and workshops during non—school hours.
One of the unique solutions is the absence of a separate auditorium in the school: school-wide events take place in the atrium. The space is illuminated by anti-aircraft lanterns and cuts through three floors of the building. With the help of acoustic curtains, it is transformed into a single hall with 500 seats and a zone with a stage with 150 seats. The atrium looks different on each level: combinations of different recreational spaces and outlines create a multidimensional structure for activities, recreation and entertainment.
Next to the atrium there is a two—level library with a media laboratory. The library space is occupied by a coworking area with places for individual and group work, a transformable area for watching movies and a literature distribution area. The walls and ceiling are covered with acoustic panels made of wood fiber.
In ATRIUM's understanding, a school building should not only discipline, but also provide an incentive for learning about the world, creativity and communication with peers — not only during studies, but also during recess. In the recreation area of the secondary school there is a climbing net and a climbing wall, as well as hearing tubes through which you can talk while on different floors. In the general atrium, a magnetic marker board is adjacent to the auditorium. In addition to the usual classrooms, the school has an educational vegetable garden, and under the console next to it there is an area with stationary furniture for outdoor activities.
A walking route with wooden decking is provided for recreation. Behind the school there is a courtyard and a sports area consisting of a school stadium with bleachers, a running track with a jumping pit, a cardio area, a basketball court, warm-up areas, gymnastics and much more. The stands are integrated into the landscape, separating the sports area from the event area. All access roads and technical driveways are also inscribed in the natural terrain.
