School in the residential complex "Symbol"
The architecture and functional solutions of the school for 1,225 students in a developing area in the east of Moscow follow the principles of integrated development of the territory of the former Sickle and Hammer factory, which is designed by ATRIUM. "Symbol" is a modern complex with a developed infrastructure, including educational facilities for high—quality education of children. One of them was the Bauman Engineering School No. 1580, which was created on the basis of advanced solutions for external and internal devices. The building continues the recognizable aesthetics of the residential complex, which is embodied in residential buildings, the Green River Park and a variety of infrastructure to create a new quality of life in Lefortovo.

Thus, five functional blocks of the school are fused into one picturesque zigzag shape: a sports and medical block, an elementary school block, a middle and high school block, an information center or auditorium block and a recreational block.
The latter, which is a multi-light lobby space with an open staircase and a stepped amphitheater with bleachers, serves as a kind of "hinge" between them, a connecting link and an internal architectural dominant. It is a place of meetings and constructive interaction, organized meetings and spontaneous communication. It is also possible to place an interactive museum and arrange temporary creative exhibitions. This approach makes the school not an ordinary building, but a mini-city, where different typologies of spaces arise: inner streets, squares, parks, visually connected with street spaces.
Adjacent to the central core from two opposite sides, the sports and medical block and the block of general school premises form the main entrance to the building and an extensive area in front of it: for general gatherings and celebrations. At the same time, the space is organized so that the main entrance is visible from the main entrance to the school grounds: This way parents will see the children coming in and out.
Since the ATRIUM bureau was engaged in designing a comprehensive solution for the entire district, from building architecture to design code and landscape design, it was especially important for architects how the school would interact with the context. Thus, the main parade area of the school smoothly flows into the landscaping of the park, creating a composition with a single pattern.
Since the surrounding building is quite high, the roof of the school building was worked with as a full-fledged fifth facade, to which the paving pattern near the building "passes".
External walls can also become communication tools: it is possible to place large multimedia or projection screens on them and broadcast educational, reference and entertainment information.
The school accepted its first students in 2023. And to become a clear evidence that those innovative solutions in the design of the educational environment that the ATRIUM bureau has already tested in the field of expensive and patronage projects are also applicable to district schools on the balance sheet of the Department of Education. Perhaps in the near future, this example will convince other developers to take a step towards high-quality school architecture, which is necessary for the education of a new generation of post-industrial society.
