ATRIUM is designing a 500-place educational centre in Moscow’s Presnensky District, combining a school for 350 pupils with a preschool for 150 children. Located on Sergey Makeev Street beside the Sredny Krasnogvardeysky Pond and an established residential neighbourhood, the project develops a connected learning environment for different age groups, teaching formats and everyday activities.

The elongated site along 2nd Chernogryazskaya Street determined the building’s composition. The educational centre occupies the central part of the plot, preserving open areas on either side. The preschool and its dedicated play spaces are positioned to the north, while the school and a multipurpose sports field occupy the southern part of the site. The arrangement separates circulation routes for different age groups while maintaining the spatial coherence of the complex.

The school and preschool are composed of shifted and rotated volumes ranging from one to four storeys. Their arrangement creates a distinctive silhouette and establishes the internal logic of movement through the building.

The preschool occupies a separate three-storey block. Group rooms are organised according to age, while spaces for learning activities, music and physical education are arranged around a dedicated shared area. Several rooms can be reconfigured to support different formats of teaching, play and activity.

At the heart of the school is a multi-storey atrium connecting the floors, recreation areas and principal communal functions. A flexible 200-seat assembly space with a stage set flush with the floor occupies its centre. The amphitheatre works simultaneously as circulation, informal seating and a setting for learning, interaction and school events. Double- and triple-height spaces visually connect the floors and create an open spatial structure throughout the school.

The second floor accommodates a library and information centre with a media library and spaces for individual and group study. Laboratory and research facilities, an IT lab, a multipurpose studio and a sports hall extend the educational programme beyond conventional classrooms. Together, these spaces support independent learning, collaborative projects and research-based activities.

The interiors are based on a light, neutral palette, with yellow and green accents defining transitions, communal spaces and areas within the preschool. The same visual system continues onto the facade, where yellow metal elements mark entrances and connections between darker and lighter volumes. Colour becomes part of the wayfinding strategy and reinforces the architectural identity of the educational centre.
