The new educational complex in Astana, designed by ATRIUM, has become one of the most contemporary educational facilities in Kazakhstan. All school spaces are developed on the basis of European educational design experience. The buildings are arranged around a large internal courtyard, which becomes the main public space where pupils and teachers can gather, and where exhibitions and festivals can take place. The principal educational spaces — the primary and senior schools, as well as the sports zone — are located around its perimeter.

A wide variety of circulation routes is provided inside the complex, allowing pupils to shape their own path through the building. All spaces are visually connected: the assembly hall opens views towards the street, while from the corridors and recreation areas it is possible to see what is happening inside the assembly hall.

The architects sought to create a contemporary educational environment while linking its aesthetic language to local cultural traditions. Referring to the philosophy of Vastu, the complex takes the form of a spiral with rays extending from it, symbolising movement and development. This configuration also made it possible to create a spacious internal courtyard protected from noise and wind. The building facades feature a pattern composed of local motifs and symbols, with all elements specially designed by ATRIUM. Natural materials are used in the school interiors, together with ornaments that reinterpret traditional Kazakh patterns.
