The masterplan for the new city of Zahra’a Al-Falak in Abu Dhabi, developed by ATRIUM architectural studio, has won the annual Project Russia 2026 Award in the Development Concepts category.

Established by the leading architectural media outlet Project Russia, the award was presented this year in three categories: Development Concepts, Research and Temporary Architecture. The printed almanac featured 100 projects selected from more than 400 submissions. The award ceremony and presentation of the new almanac took place on 27 May at Gostiny Dvor, on the opening day of the ARCH Moscow exhibition.

Zahra’a Al-Falak works with a territory at the scale of a city and proposes a model for the future urban environment of the United Arab Emirates. The concept covers 5,000 hectares and is designed for 592,000 residents. In its parameters, the new city is comparable to major global centres, including Barcelona and Dubai.

The urban concept is based on the principle of Open-Code Urbanism. ATRIUM approaches the city as an open system in which each resident can choose their own rhythm, route and scenario of life. This logic defines the structure of the city, the distribution of functions, the connections between districts and the character of its public spaces.

The name Zahra’a Al-Falak translates as “Radiance of the Heavens”. This cosmic metaphor forms the basis of the project’s spatial idea. The city is conceived as a system of 15 specialised zones, each with its own identity, programme and atmosphere. These zones operate as “planets” within a single urban ecosystem.

This approach makes it possible to combine the scale of the masterplan with the precise calibration of individual environments.

A report from the award ceremony is available on the Project Russia website.
