According to the concept proposed by the client, the MAN supermarket chain, a small shopping centre was to replace the market near the railway station. The site is located in the very centre of the city, and the adjacent area has strong potential to be transformed from an unorganised transport node into a high-quality urban square.

The proposed solution responds to this ambition. A conventional rectangle, efficient from the point of view of retail, is formally divided into two interwoven volumes, articulated through different facade treatments. The main entrance, with display glazing, is positioned on the corner in order to attract the maximum number of visitors. The glazing continues along the internal escalator on a diagonal line, creating the effect of a spacious double-height atrium despite the building’s modest size and dense programme.

At the same time, this brings the interior outwards and contributes to the intimate character of the building — something rarely achieved in shopping centres. This effect is reinforced by the use of timber in the finish, which appears to penetrate through the glass into the interior, and by the creation of a kind of stage-set framing at the entrance. Another facade material is perforated aluminium sheet. Cossack ornaments are applied to it, reflecting the status of Uryupinsk, known as the capital of the Don Cossacks. This surface is well suited to image projection, so the architects also propose incorporating a media facade into the project.
