The project is located within the sports cluster of Astana, Kazakhstan, and consists of a basketball academy and an arena for 35,000 spectators. The building’s dynamic silhouette evokes the constant shifts of rhythm and direction in basketball and refers to different dribbling techniques. This form solves several tasks at once: it shapes both the ceremonial and internal courtyards of the school, increases the number of classrooms, and separates the academy from the sports arena.
The academy is a full secondary school for 200 students, with its own sports halls, student accommodation and apartments for coaches and teachers. Boys and girls can live in groups of three in rooms organised into residential sections. Accommodation for upper secondary pupils is provided on the first and fourth floors, while the second and third floors are designed for middle school pupils. The academy building also contains a large public space intended for communication and development, including a reading room, a parents’ lounge and places for recreation.
A heated above-ground passage provides direct access from the academy to the main basketball arena. Within the playing hall, dedicated zones are предусмотрены for the teams, while the spectator areas are raised 2 metres above ground level, helping visitors orient themselves easily. The steep rake of the seating ensures that the entire basketball court is visible from every seat. In addition, a large underground car park is provided, from which visitors can move directly into the VIP zone. This part of the arena has its own ceremonial lobby and a range of spaces for different events and meetings.
